Today I was supposed to go to an art show with my friend Martine from Bryn Mawr, but that plan got derailed.

You see, when I was coming back from shopping at the Italian Market, I came across a stray kitten. It was wandering around in the street mewling. There were no people nearby and no other kittens or mama cat in sight. I couldn't leave it, so I brought it home, and with Suzanne's help I corraled off the front room of the apartment and cat-proofed it as much as possible. We made a vet appointment for Monday (no vets are open today, and the VCA cat hospital is full up). We're not sure how old it is. It's old enough to walk around and drink from a saucer. Aside from a crusty eye and a slight limp, it seems healthy - its coat is in good shape (although we aren't ruling out the possibility that it has fleas) and it's very vocal, which is a good sign.

I got some kitten formula, a bottle and some wet kitty food. I haven't tried the food but it seems to like the formula, and will take it from a saucer, although I bottle-fed it some too. I can't tell how much it weighs or how often to feed it so I'm going to give it formula every eight hours - as much as it will take.

If anyone knows what to do, or knows of a site that has instructions on feeding kittens, I would much appreciate it.

As for whether we're going to keep it...well, I think maybe we are. I don't think I would have taken it home if I didn't intend to. And I've already named it Roo - which is a good neutral name because we don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet.

Take it to the vet, who can give you a good guess on whether it's old enough to be weaned. In the meantime, buy some baby cereal and mix it up with milk. If it's not weaned, that'll get it started, and if it is weaned, it can still eat the baby cereal.

IT seems to be good with kitten formula, and can lap it out of a saucer. I'm going to try some watered-down kitten meat food tonight.

Right now, the little dear is taking a nap. Shhh! :)

Black, with a few little white hairs here and there. It has blue eyes.

Update: It will drink formula from a saucer, but it won't eat the kitten food. It must be really young.

Must be. To find out if it's a boy Roo or a girl Roo, pick it up and look under the tail. If you see a colon, it's a male. A semicolon is female.
