I think I want to start taking classes in something or other - fiction writing, Japanese, Hebrew, or some artistic medium - but I don't know where to start looking. I figure some of you folks know where I can find information on evening classes for adults. Is there a publication? An organization? A website?

I'm not used to finding stuff to go out and do on my own (this is a skill that I have always needed, and now want, to develop). So a little help here would be much appreciated.

University of Maryland has something called "Art and Learning Center" in its Student Union, and that center offers classes of the sort you're describing. And they are open to non-students as well. So, your local campuses would be one place to start looking.

If you have a certain hobby in mind, see if there's an association or club related to that hobby in your area.

Town Halls might also have that sort of information.

Best of luck.

Look around the local universities (Penn, Drexel, Temple) for their "continuing education" programs. Also, for particular areas (e.g. art) local organizations (like the Art Institute) probably offer classes.

If you find a more generally useful resource, let me know. I'm also thinking about taking a class, but I haven't found the time to scour all the different schools' web sites to find something suitable.

Depends what you want.
Hebrew? The Gersham Y is who you need to call.
Chinese? The Asian Arts Alliance.
French? Alliance Francais.
Writing? Free Library of Philadelphia.

Those places will be far cheaper than UPenn or Drexel.

Does your area have a free weekly newspaper? I have seen a lot of advertisements for classes in the two that come out around here, and the classes are usually cheaper than the ones offered through colleges.
