Sorry for putting in a whole bunch of updates at once.  I typed them all on my laptop during the past week, but didn't put them up because of our bad internet connection.

Some of you may be familiar with the play Pippin (though not as familiar as my little brother, who has seen it four times in different productions and can recite parts of it at length, which is scary).  If you're not, let's just say that it's a satiric anti-war play that was written in the 70s and is enjoying a resurgence in popularity for reasons I trust I don't have to explain.  I must say that the Goth flavor of the production I saw suited it very well.  In other words, hooray for Goth Pippin!

I interviewed Grandpa over the phone on Friday, and got a lot of good stuff about the building of the Berlin Wall.  Dad also got me New York Times articles on the subject, so I'm all set for the paper I have to write.  Dad and I also tried to get me a "thesis chair," or a comfy office chair, from Staples.  Dad had to badger one of the employees to help us because he and another employee were standing nearby doing Lord-knows-what and ignoring us, and he did not turn out to be very helpful.  The store's computer ordering system was down, so it was a waste of time anyway.  I'm going to order the chair from here.  Mom also got a Bas Bleu catalog and told me to order stuff from it using the credit card.  I see a couple of things that would make suitable gifts.  They actually sell blue stockings (which would make a good present for Valerie, since she is herself a bluestocking woman - that is, a scholarly lady), and they have a book called An Assembly Such As This, which is Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy's point of view.  One of those will make a good present for Martine.

My Ruse books should be coming at the end of this month, since CrossGen has been saved from going out of business.  Joy oh joy!

I went to the Rennaissance Festival with Mom and Benjamin on Saturday.  Benjamin got a wool cloak which can actually be used practically.  I couldn't find one that suited me - I didn't like the thick wool ones and the prettier ones were all too long.  Mom suggested that I go fabric shopping with my friend Martine, who can sew, and pay her to make a cloak for me.  I wonder if she'll do it.  Can't hurt to inquire.  Anyway, I was successful in a couple of things at least.  I got a new leather lace for one of my gilly-shoes, since the old one was broken.  I also got a present for [livejournal.com profile] tempus_aeterna, who will soon have a birthday.  I saw a particularly good abridged performance of Twelfth Night and an incredibly cute Yorkshire terrier puppy with little devil horns tied on.  Of course I liked the costumes, and I got a few compliments on mine.  I also enjoyed hanging around the Drench-a-Wench game.  You know that carnival game where a person sits on a seat above a water tank, and people throw balls at a target, and if they hit it the seat drops and the person on it falls in the tank?  That's Drench-a-Wench.  The attendants were making a lot of double entendres.  For example, throwing balls were three for a dollar and a man bought three dollars worth.  He failed to drench the wench, and the attendants said, "I guess it doesn't make a difference if you have more balls than the average man."  They also said the inevitable, "It doesn't matter so much how hard it is, just where you put it" and "I guess that wasn't hard enough to make her wet."  A rainstorm started up at the end and we had a hard time getting out of the parking lot, which made Mom unhappy, but otherwise it was a pretty good day.  Next time I go to one of these things, if all goes well, I shall have a paying job and can buy myself mead and something both pretty and expensive.

Since I haven't been going online at home, due to the crappiness of our connection, I had a lot of e-mails waiting for me when I got back, and had to deal with them all at once.  I also felt obligated to write this entry, though I really want to get back to reading Kushiel's Dart.  I'm on page 670 or so and I might forego sleeping to finish it tonight.  I haven't been this absorbed in a book for a while.  I also find that reading a good book often spurs me to write, so it might be good for my fanfic - but I'm going to be quite busy now, so I might not have much time to write.

I've also been thinking of writing an article for the Bi-Co newspaper, but I haven't read it much, and I might not do it if they don't take part-time people, since I don't think I can be a regular member of the staff.  A few articles might be interesting to do and will look good on my record.

Well, I may be busy now that I'm back, but it's a reprieve from my family.  I like them best in small doses.
