I feel like I haven't been out in a long time, although it's really only been a week (as long as I've had Roo - it's her fault). Today I biked to Rosie's and Chinatown, in that order. The trip reminded me why I like this city so much.
On the way to Rosie's I came across two girls (not much more than ten, if that) selling cookies and lemonade from their front porch to raise money for Katrina victims. I bought one of their cookies, which was quite tasty. At Rosie's I got some really fluffy yarn as a birthday present for my friend Liz. It was on sale, so it was quite cheap for such nice yarn.
In Chinatown, part of 8th Street between Arch and Cherry was cordoned off for the mid-fall festival. I didn't know that was going on when I went there. There were lots of people gathered around, some of them in traditional Chinese dress, and some performers putting on shows. A youth group (composed not only of Chinese kids but also white, black and I think some Hispanic kids) did a dragon dance to the beat of drums and cymbals. A few local women were taking up a charity collection (if I need to tell you what for, you haven't been paying attention), and took a picture of me putting my money in the box. Well, it was more complicated than that - they got me to pose and everything, which was kind of difficult because they spoke broken English with a very thick accent, but eventually we got everything sorted out. I had lunch/dinner at a local Malaysian cafe[1], then went to one of the markets nearby to get some stuff for the office charity drive. I got some cleaning detergents and a couple bags of rice. I'm planning to pick up some more stuff tomorrow.
Getting home was kind of difficult because it's hard to ride your bike above Market Street (at least if you're me), but it was still a nice trip. It's a nice day and there were lots of people out enjoying it. It just seemed like one of those good Philadelphia ambience days, you know?
I have to go. Her Royal Highness, Princess Roo, is insistently requesting my presence.
