Weekend Recap
Feb. 7th, 2005 07:01 pmWell, the Patriots won the Super Bowl. This is something of a disappointment to my family, who were rooting for the Eagles. Eagles linebacker Dahani Jones is my mother's boss' son. Benjamin made a big deal out of watching the game, probably because he picked up the "football is cool" attitude from Daniel. As for me, I'm not really interested in the game, but the commercials are always funny. I particularly liked the FexEx-Kinko's one.
Did I mention that I was home this weekend? No? Well, I went home on Sunday because there was a big career conference in Arlington today and I thought I should attend. There were a few places that caught my interest - about half of them were insurance companies. Apparently the skills one learns as an undergraduate anthropology major are also good for working as a claims investigator. I really want to do nonprofit or museum work, but I should keep a wide focus. And besides, some of these places were offering an impressive starting salary and benefits. One even gives its employees a company car, cellphone and laptop! I'm interested in applying to the State Department too, but the hiring process takes a long time because they have to do security checks on all the applicants. All in all, I think the conference was worth the trip.
Home is a bit of a mess right now. Mom and Dad are having the plumbing in their bathroom redone, so they've been using my bathroom. The shelving has been removed from the TV alcove in the family room, so now the TV is sitting there on a little bench. The couches are covered with sheets since the workmen are still doing their thing in there. And then there's the kitchen - I've mentioned before that Mom was redoing it. The cabinets and countertops are in, though the walls are bare, the outlets have no coverings on them and the floor has not had tile installed yet. All the stuff from the kitchen is now in the basement, and everyone's having takeout for dinner. I've got to admit, the layout for the new kitchen is much better than the old one, and when it's all done we'll have a real gas stove instead of a crappy electric one. Although I'm probably not going to be home to enjoy it except for Spring Break, because if all goes well I will be moving into my own apartment somewhere.
I have to visit Daniel at Columbia some time in the near future, especially since he actually invited me. Although I'll probably leave that until after Spring Break.
Reviews have started coming in for my Ruse fanfic. I think the initial readers started spreading the word to their friends or something. It's all very positive and gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. :)
