This weekend's Mage game was cancelled. It would not have sucked so much if I had caught the e-mail announcing the cancellation, but I didn't. So instead of seeing Sky Captain with my friend Elizabeth (because it started at 2:15 and I thought I had to be in Philly at 4:00), we watched my video of Seven Samurai. Then I took the train to Philly, found nobody home, concluded the game was cancelled, and moped for a while.
I decided not to make a complete waste of the trip, so I saw Sky Captain myself. I liked it, mostly, except for Gwynneth Paltrow's (lack of) acting and one deus ex machina near the end. The movie manages to be forties "weird science" sci-fi without the camp. The scriptwriters made good use of humor at unexpected moments to sabotage anything cliched or oversentimental. It was a nice trick.
Well, I guess I should get some work done, then maybe play a little (or a lot of) Civ 2. That abandonware site I found should keep me entertained for a while yet.
