Funny Days

Daniel's coming home on Saturday, and I should have The Angry Clam: The Greatest Story Ever Told delivered here by his party on Tuesday. Mom has set it up to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed party (I've known about this for a while, but I only just got the joke - it's for a bunch of teenagers), which means I have to get out all the TMNT action figures (most of which used to be mine) and arrange them in the family room. I can't wait for Daniel (a.k.a. Wah) to come home!

Sarah was sick again on Wednesday so I didn't get much work done. There was a lot of rain in the afternoon when I left. I got drenched and my umbrella was twisted up by the wind, so I had to throw it out. It wasn't the only umbrella that ended up in a Farragut North station trash bin. My hair got frizzy from being wet, which made me unhappy (I can't believe I've started to care about how my hair looks, if I'm not careful I won't be a real geek anymore). My optical mouse got wet and stopped working for a while, so I had to use an older optical mouse with a wired reciever from my desktop computer. I also lost my thumb drive, which I actually left on Carla's desk. But now the mouse is working again and I have the thumb drive, so it's all good.

At my gym someone was demonstrating the use of a balance ball, or rather half-ball on a flat plastic base on the floor. The ball is plastic filled with air. She said it's hard to balance on at first. Some exercises include jogging on it, jumping up and down on it, and squatting on it. It's hard on the legs because it's so difficult to balance. I'm proud to say that I tried it myself and had little trouble with any of those moves. Must be all the yoga stretches and DDR.

On Thursday Sarah was back and we ordered some new pictures from the Library of Congress by fax, which is more difficult than it sounds because of course it requires a government form. I used the electric typewriter to fill it out. The typewriter has a backspace button that will put white-out over your mistakes in a nice thin layer. Unfortunately I filled in some things the wrong way and Sarah had to write out another form by hand anyway. I also faxed and copied some stuff. It doesn't sound like much, but I actually got a lot done with that. The pizza party at lunch was not much of a party because the other interns weren't there and others were just wandering in and out getting some pizza. It was kind of a disappointment, but at least I got pizza out of it.

I put the Ford in the garage when I got home because Dad said there would be a tropical storm (we only got the edge of it, but there's a hurricaine on the way Saturday. I hope it doesn't disrupt Daniel's plane.

Marjorie sent me a letter I have to reply to, I'm going to see Rabbi Fred on Tuesday to talk about books for my thesis, and I have to review math chapters in my GRE book. I did better on the math practice problems than I thought I would, but I could do better if I brush up again. I've got less than two weeks before the test.

Last night they were showing the first Karate Kid movie on ABC Family. They cut it off at the end of the karate tournament, which I found very vexing (I use words like "vexing," deal with it). I wonder what Randall thinks of the Karaate Kid movies, since he actually knows Okinawan karate and a bunch of other things (for those who don't know, Randall is one of the computer techs at Bryn Mawr and he also teaches a few martial arts classes there). I got a bit more fanfic done and played some Deus Ex. Unfortunately the game blipped out on me for no reason. Again, very vexing.

A good thing I found out, though, is that if I decrease the sound acceleration on the computer I can play DX without putting it in a compatability mode for an earlier version of Windows, so I get the full benefit of my working memory. Sw33t.

Something very weird: I have been wearing the same earrings for a couple of weeks, and I remember Mom telling me that I should change my earrings, which I have not done because of simple laziness (she didn't say anything about laziness, I just added that). The thing is, I don't remember whether she actually said it or whether I just dreamed that she said it. I don't know if asking her will help because she doesn't always remember what she did or said yesterday, and if it turns out that she didn't say anything, I'll feel really dumb. Either way, I've changed my earrings.
