I've recently considered knitting a project for charity and was looking for a program. I found a few, but today I discovered that I can do something closer to home.

As those of you who've been to my place know, there is a Wawa on 2nd street about half a block from my building. There's this particular homeless man who sits nearby frequently.1 He was actually one of the first people I met when I moved here, and when I see him, I usually give him a little money and talk to him. I think he appreciates the conversation more than the money, to be honest. He also does little odd jobs here and there for money or spare clothes. Someone recently gave him a winter coat and comforter for one of those.

However, he does not have any socks. I plan to buy him some socks when I go on my shopping trip this weekend. But I think he would really appreciate getting a pair of hand-knitted socks, so when I'm done with what I'm making right now, I will make him a worsted-weight pair.

What's a Wawa?

Socks made with love are the best kind. Your friend will be delighted to get them. With luck, when you get to know him better, you'll be able to invite him to move in, and then he won't be homeless any more.

Wawa is a convenience store like 7-11, although not with as great a range. They are mostly a Pennsylvania and Delaware thing. I think there are a few in New Jersey.

I bought the guy a few pairs of socks because I realized I don't know his shoe size (which I would have to, to make socks). I might ask him about that, although I was thinking they'd be a surprise, which they can't be if I ask him.
