A poll from CNN - Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton favorites for 2008 Presidential election

Personally, I find the notion that Hillary Clinton might become the Democrats' next presidential candidate to be utterly laughable. Pretty much everyone in her own party hates her, and a lot of people will probably think a) we aren't ready for a female president, b) we may be ready for a female president but Hillary does not have enough redeeming qualities to help people get comfortable with the idea.1 Then again, she has a very high degree of name recognition, which might be enough to help her win the primary if enough Democratic voters are interested. And, y'know, stranger things have happened. Schwarzenager (sp?) was elected governor of California, after all...

As for Giuliani being the Republican nominee, he also has name recognition going for him, especially after 9/11. I imagine he was very well-known before that, but that might just have been because I grew up in New York. I think he could conceivably be nominated: not only does he have star power, but if the Republican party feels that they must do something about their "rabid raving right-wingers" image in order to keep one of their own in the position of President, he would be an excellent choice, especially since he would even be attractive to non-Republicans. Heck, I would probably vote for him - although since I don't follow him too closely, I must admit that a closer look at his policies and legislation might change my mind.

Remember, this is all extremely hypothetical anyway. The next Presidential election is all of two years away.2 And a year in politics is a long time.

1 This leaves out the people who would have a violent knee-jerk reaction against the idea of having a woman in the Oval Office. I left them out because the non-chauvanists taking the chauvanists into consideration will probably have more of an impact than the chauvanists themselves.

2 Unless the Democrats win Congress this year and make good on their threat to impeach Bush and manage to drive him out of the White House doing it. An impeachment is within the realm of possibility at this point, but I think he'll be able to stall being turned out of office.
