Ciani, my new roomate, arrived last night - or, rather, very early this morning. A series of mishaps caused her a significant delay in getting here. At least she warned me first. Since I had to let her in during the wee hours of the morning, I have not slept well, but it's okay. She is still setting up her stuff. She brought a lot of plants and a nice painting which should liven up the place.
I'm hoping that I can show her around the neighborhood - the Italian Market, some of the places I hang out, the local supermarket. But I don't know if I can in this infernal weather. I actually gave up on doing my grocery shopping at lunch the way I usually do on Tuesdays, because the prospect of walking back home with a load of groceries, or bicycling, seemed daunting in this weather, and either could invite heat exhaustion.
I should at least take her for dinner or a drink this evening so we can get to know each other, and maybe work out stuff like paying bills and keeping the place clean, or if we're going to share meals.*
Oh, and I've done something about the ant problem. I found out that the entrance to their colony is in this little seam under the baseboard near the fridge. I put an ant poison thingy behind the fridge. I hope that will get rid of them.
*When I went to these little "real life" seminars and workshops run by the Career Office during my senior year of college, they suggested that roommates could save money by grocery shopping and cooking together, but as far as I can tell this isn't a common practice.
