All the Shiny Things!
May. 23rd, 2006 01:16 pmAs of today, I am the proud owner of:
The arrival of all these goodies prompted me to remark: "It's like Hannukah in spring!" Except it isn't, really, because these are all things I bought with birthday money, so technically they are belated birthday presents.
In other, less happy news, it appears that while I had to pay my health insurance company a 100-dollar deductible for the privelege of getting a year's supply of Concerta - paying a 10- or 20-dollar copay each time - I need to bring in a written perscription every month to get a refill, instead of getting by with a perscription for multiple monthly refills. My previous insurance company was not this anal, although I think the total annual cost I'd pay for my perscription would be higher. Well, at least I can get my medicine. But making me pay a whopping deductible and not letting me use a multiple-refill scrip is just sadistic.
Oh, and it's past time I talked about the events of this weekend. On Saturday
ironroot,
arcessita and
tempus_aeterna went with me to my favorite dim sum restaurant for a birthday lunch (
drakonous had come down with a horrible malady, by which I mean a migraine, and was unable to attend). They also paid for it, although I wasn't expecting them to, and later helped me search for energy drinks, pop rocks and pixie stix, which brings me to the second major event of this weekend.
I was searching for the aforementioned items because my friend
shinyhappygoth was coming to visit, so she could see her brother's band The Randy Bandits play at a Philadelphia club. Although she does not drink alcohol, she wanted to try and make a "Sonic Screwdriver" as long as we were at a bar. So while we were waiting for the band to set up, we got ourselves a screwdriver and some small glasses and tried mixing various things in the glasses. I didn't actually manage to get my hands on some pop rocks, so we just had Rockstar (
shinyhappygoth wanted Red Bull, but that stuff tastes vile, and I had it on good authority that Rockstar tastes better. The truth is, they are both disgusting) and pixie sticks and some candy crystals. Two parts screwdriver to one part Rockstar actually tasted okay, but the pixie stix and candy crystals made it icky. Neither of us wanted the mixture with candy in it, but
shinyhappygoth got another bar patron to bolt down the drink, so it was okay. Unfortunately, while the Rockstar/screwdriver mix tasted okay, it wasn't really "sonic," and at the end I opined that we had ruined a perfectly good screwdriver.
Oh, the band. Well, the Randy Bandits are pretty good. I have described their music as the love child of Latin and Folk raised by old-school Rock 'n' Roll, but after further thought, I think they are like They Might Be Giants translated by The Beatles and performed by Dispatch. Or, well, you know, they're just themselves and they're really good. You can't help dancing to their music, and you catch yourself playing it in your head the next day.
On the knitting front, things are going okay. I finished the ankle part of my sock and, after seeking advice at Rosie's, did the heel flap. Now I have to turn the heel. The problem is, I seem to have misplaced one of the double-pointed size-3 needles I'm using, so I only have four and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need five. I shall have to look for it when I get home.
- A DVD of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. Original uncut version, of course.
- A limited-edition DVD box set of the Cowboy Bebop series.
- A box set of Akira Kurosawa's greatest samurai period films - Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro.
- A pair of Bose noise-cancelling headphones.
