I tried to bake some peanut butter cookies today, in the process demonstrating yet again my incompetence at baking. My cookies were still unbaked in the middle, no matter what I did, so I had to throw them out. Fortunately I managed better with cooking dinner. As my brother says, cooking is an art, but baking is a science. Well, that explains it - I'm good at art and I've never been good at science.

But you probably want to hear about my graduation and my birthday, right?

This last weekend was one of the most significant and hectic in my life. I spent most of my birthday trying to pack up my room, with help from my family (or certain members of my family, anyway). Every time I got something packed or brought it to the car, more stuff seemed to spontaneously generate in my room. I almost forgot a couple of things, but luckily my parents noticed them.

On Saturday we had the convocation ceremony, at which speeches were made and awards were handed out. On Sunday was the actual graduation. Bryn Mawr is small enough that they can have all the students come up on stage, one by one, to recieve their diplomas. Of course, it still took forever and a half. Much to my delight (and that of my parents and grandparents), I graduated magna cum laude with honors! One reason I'm happy about this is that my paternal grandparents paid all of my college tuition, and I was glad to be able to make them proud. They also gave me an insane amount of money for my graduation present. I'll have a lot left over even after buying furniture for my apartment. Being moderately savvy, I will put some of it in a savings account.

I've been home three days and my mother and my little brother are already driving me crazy. I'm considering going completely nocturnal, like my brother Daniel, for the duration of my stay here. But I think they'd bother me anyway. Mom and Benjamin are used to Daniel's borderline narcolepsy and both know better than to bother him most of the time, but I don't think they'll show me such benign neglect.

One good thing about being home is the new entertainment system. Mom had a plasma TV and all the fixin's installed while I was away. The universal remote that's supposed to control the aforementioned TV and fixin's still needs some tweaking, so just turning on the damn TV to watch it is more difficult than it needs to be. I'm getting the hang of it, though. Playing PS2 on the plasma TV is pretty cool, except that when you're in a dark spot in a game, it's difficult to see anything, and even turning up the light and contrast doesn't seem to help much. I don't know, it's just something about the way the screen works.

It's my friend Diana's birthday today, so I'm going to call her and say hello. Maybe I can also visit her for a few days and escape from The Harpy (Mom) and The Troll (Benjamin). Martina, Benjamin's nanny, is getting her associate's degree from Montgomery College this Friday. In her typical overachiever fashion, she's Phi Beta Kappa. I plan to go to the ceremony. I need to get her a card.

Finally, an explanation: I did not update my journal more promptly after all these significant events first because I was busy with my family, packing and unpacking, and also because we have a dial-up connection here at home and going online seems to me like a lot more trouble than it's worth. At least in my apartment I'll have DSL or something.
