Yay! Not only am I having my dim sum birthday lunch on Saturday, but on Saturday night my friend shinyhappygoth's brother is going to play in Philly with his band. We are going to meet up at the club where he's performing and she'll stay overnight.

One of the things we want to do at the club is try to make a Sonic Screwdriver - yes, named after Doctor Who's little all-purpose gadget. A Sonic Screwdriver is not, as far as we know, a real drink, but we have some ideas about how to make one. We are going to get a regular screwdriver (orange juice and vodka), plus some extra glasses. Then we're going to mix in some combination Red Bull, Pop Rocks and possibly Pixie Stix. The idea is that the drink should do something interesting, like fizzle or bubble. And taste decent, if we can manage it. I'm in charge of acquiring the Red Bull and the aforementioned candies.

Can anyone else (especially someone who knows more about cocktails) suggest something that might go in a "Sonic Screwdriver" drink?

Um, I seem to remember reading something about how mixing Red Bull and alcohol could be dangerous, although I can't for the life of me remember the reference now. Maybe it's worth doign a little research on that.

Ginger ale goes well with most drinks, and is carbonated; there's of course always the old standby club soda.

Funny, the addition of Red Bull was actually suggested by a bartender. Thanks for the warning, though - I'll bring along some ginger ale just in case.
