Things are looking up!
Even though it is raining awfully outside, I'm feeling very happy. Here's why.
Last night I went to a "Sick of J-Date" singles party hosted by a Philadelphia Jewish social group. Now, it was kind of cheating because I have not actually used J-date yet. But anyway, I met a Penn grad student and, at the end of the evening, exchanged e-mails with him. We'll see what comes of that. I may have just met a nice Jewish boy.1
Today I have been given an interesting assignment at work. After the better part of two weeks spent converting a work originally written by John Edwards - a Protestant minister, Calvinist, and absolutely mind-numbingly boring in the manner of all Early Modern philosophers - I get to verify some Poul Anderson books for Baen, which is not hugely exciting, but pleases the geek in me very much.
Also, later today I am going to help
r_grayjoy dye her hair bright and unnatural colors. Although I have to figure out where she lives first so I can go there.
1Meeting a nice Jewish boy is not like meeting someone in the usual sense, because there are certain connotations. This is because it's used by parents to describe a relationship of which they approve, so the "meeting" has to involve dating and possibly marriage.

(That's a pretty good summation of what meeting a nice Jewish boy entails. I would point out that meeting a nice Jewish girl is pretty much the same, except it's usually only the mother who encourages it.)

On a tangential (but fairly amusing) note, I keep getting ads for J-Date in my gmail...

How many times have I expounded on the theory that the Chinese are the ten lost tribes?

A Chinese guy and a Jewish guy - both New Yorkers - are having a conversation, and at some point the discussion goes into the histories of their respective cultures.
"My culture is very old, about 4000 years," says the Chinese guy.
"Well," the Jewish guy says, "mine has been around about 5000 years, give or take."
The Chinese guy looks very surprised and says, "Wow, how did you guys survive without takeout for 1000 years?"

And then you both can help me. I desperately need some brightly colored streaks in my hair, but once cannot prebleach alone! :)
