No reasonable person would expect you to take a short-notice trip from Michigan to DC for an interview for an *internship*. I mean, what the hell?

I suggest replying that unfortunately you are unable to travel on such short notice from Detroit to DC, but you are available to do a phone interview at any time. Basically, just say straight out what the situation is. It's a perfectly reasonable thing to bring up.
