You know, this probably makes me sound like a horrible person, but recent developments arising from my issues with Mom have given me an idea of how to handle a particular scene in the fanfic I'm working on - one I've rewritten twice that basically has put the rest of the story on hold.

As well as seeing my relationship with Mom in a new light, I've begun to see this story in a new light as well. It's not just about how much strain it puts the relationship when a guy doesn't tell his girlfriend about his superhero secret identity,1 or even about the toll that secrets take on a relationship. It's about the well-intentioned but utterly stupid things we do to protect the people we love.

1This is a Batman Beyond fanfic by the way.

...Why would that make you sound horrible? Good writers mine their personal lives.

As Scifan says, it is totally natural to draw on life experiences when writing a story. It is also totally natural to use writing as a means to gain perspective on one's life experiences. Neither makes you sound like a horrible person.
