I would bet that it's just the enclosure that's flaking on you, and not the drive itself - hard drives don't usually flake randomly after such a short period of time. If it's a 3.5" drive, find someone with a desktop computer and pop the drive into it to see if it still works, or take a chance on another enclosure - TigerDirect's got lots of 'em cheap.
